BIRD BEHAVIOR
Finding Nesting Birds

Do a survey of nesting birds on your property. Here are eight tips for locating nesting birds.

1. If a male is singing, he will probably nest nearby.

2. If you see a pair of birds, they are probably a mated pair and going to nest within 50 yards of where you see them.

3. If you see birds mating, the nest is probably being built nearby.

4. If you see a bird with nesting material, follow it to the nest.

5. If you see birds flying with food in their bill, they are probably going to the nest to feed young.

6. If you see a bird flying with a small white blob in its bill, it is probably flying away from the nest with a fecal sac (droppings from the young), nature's diaper service.

7. If you hear tiny little "cheeps" from a shrub, nest hole, or tree, there are probably nestlings calling from a nest in that location.

8. If, as you repeatedly walk by an area, a bird flushes from it, there is probably a nest there.

As you look for nests, it is important to be careful and not disturb the birds or do anything that might harm their chances for successfully raising young. Click here for tips on proper etiquette for observing nesting birds.
