BIRD FEEDING
Wintering Sparrows

fosp picture
Fox Sparrow
Attract wintering sparrows to your bird feeder by providing bird seed sprinkled on the ground and cover nearby, such as a brush pile or dense shrubs. Sparrows like to feed on the ground and many have the habit of jumping forward, then scratching as they jump backwards to uncover seeds. A nearby brushpile gives them a place to hide if a hawk or other predator is in the area.

Sparrows eat millet, cracked corn, and sunflower seeds, especially hulled sunflower seeds. Dark-eyed Juncos, White-throated, White-crowned, Tree, and Fox Sparrows will flock to your feeders. In southern areas, wintering Chipping Sparrows may come to bird feeders.
