Watch For: Stokes Birds At Home
Our new public television series, Stokes Birds At Home, begins in many states now. Check our Show Times listing for when it can be seen in your area. And for complete descriptions of what to look for on every show, see our Episodes pages.

At Your Bird Feeders: Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls

Redpoll
Winter finches such as Pine Siskins, Common Redpolls, and White-winged Crossbills are being seen in large numbers in places around the country, so watch for them at your bird feeder. These are known as "irruptive species." They migrate south of their usual range in some years, usually in search of food. For more on attracting finches see Episode 108 of Stokes Birds At Home.

Bird Gardening Tip: Mail order nursery catalogs are arriving.

Tithonia
Plan your bird garden now. Order annuals that will be good for birds such as Sunflowers and Cosmos. Their seed heads will be eaten by birds. Tithonia is a beautiful orange daisy that hummmingbirds and butterflies visit. Watch a tour of the Stokes bird garden on Episode 104 and see what to plant in a butterfly garden on Episode 106 of Stokes Birds At Home.

Birding Tip: Go to the coast to look for winter loons.
Common Loons and Red-throated Loons winter on both coasts. Pacific Loons can be found on the West Coast.
