Many birds that nest in birdhouses start looking for potential housing now. Chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, Tree and Violet-green Swallows, and bluebirds will investigate nest boxes and begin breeding soon. Remove old nests of the previous year from your nest boxes if you haven't already. Repair any boxes that need it and put up some new ones. For more on birdhouses, click here, and also see Episode 110 of Stokes Birds at Home.

Spring will be arriving soon, so start thinking about what to plant in your bird garden this year. Choose a variety of flowers, shrubs, vines, and trees that are good for birds. Roses can provide food and nesting spots for birds. For a list of good rose shrubs see Episode 102 of Stokes Birds At Home. To learn more about bird gardening, click here.

Birding Tip: Look for Red-tailed Hawks

Red-tailed
Hawk
Red-tailed Hawks are involved in territorial behavior and courtship now. Their territory is about 1-2 square miles. Look for Red-tailed Hawks soaring on thermals during mid-morning on sunny days. They soar to hunt for prey, but also to survey their territory and to watch for intruding Red-tailed Hawks.
