August Birdfeeding Tips

Ruby-throated
Hummingbird
Keep your feeders full and clean in the summer. Many birds will now bring their young to the feeders. Early migrants may use the feeders as well. If grackles are invading the feeders, try safflower seed which is generally distasteful to grackles but accepted by feeder regulars like chickadees, titmice, and cardinals. Change the water and clean the birdbath every day or two so thirsty visitors will have a cool drink. Keep hummingbird feeders full and clean them every two days in very hot weather. Hummingbird migration is taking place, so hummer numbers at your feeders may swell.

Early Migration
August is a time when there is a lot of bird movement. Many species have raised their young, left their breeding territories, and begun their southward migration. Young birds are now on their own and may join with other young birds of their species to form roaming flocks. So keep your binoculars handy and start looking for new migrants. Click here to learn who is migrating now.
