September Birdfeeding Tips

American
Goldfinch
Clean birdfeeders and stock with fresh seed. Make sure you have a variety of seeds and feeders to attract a wide variety of birds. Goldfinches are late nesters and are now bringing their babies to the feeders. Feed them thistle or a finch mix in a finch feeder with tiny holes, or sunflower chips in a regular tube. Chickadee flocks are now forming. Put out black oil sunflower in a tube or hopper feeder to entice a chickadeee flock to include your feeder in their winter territory. Clean out and repair birdhouses. Birds such as bluebirds, nuthatches, and woodpeckers may use them to roost in during the winter.

Hawks in September
If you go out in September and look up into the sky, you may be surprised to see any number of hawks passing overhead. To learn how best to observe these majestic aerial predators, go here.

Bird Gardening
