Birding Tip: Mealworms For Birds
Mealworms are a very attractive food for many species of birds because they are a high protein source. They are the golden worm-like larva of a beetle (Tenebrio molitor). Store in the refrigerator or other cool place. You can purchase mealworms in pet stores, wild bird stores, and through mail-order. Bluebirds are especially fond of mealworms and will feed them to their nestlings. Train bluebirds to come to mealworms by putting some in a container on the ground near the box where bluebirds are nesting.
